document.write("
I walk to work and back, about four miles a day. I prefer to, um, edify myself rather than listen to music while I'm walking, so I go through a lot of audio material. Here are some podcasts I like:

SPOKEN

The Bat Segundo Show. Very smart long-form interviews with authors and other cultural figures. I usually seek out the ones I'm especially interested in and skip the others.

NYT Book Review. Interviews with the authors in the Book Review that week, discussion of the bookselling climate, bestseller news. About 20 minutes a week.

CBC Search Engine. A Canadian podcast about social ramifications of internet events; about 20 minutes a week.

Cory Doctorow's craphound.com. Cory podcasts his fiction sometimes, but it's his digital rights and electronic frontier stuff that I really listen for (shhh).

BBC Digital Planet covers similar terrain to Search Engine, but with a scientific rather than social slant.

The Ethicist. This mostly just duplicates content from the written version, but very endearingly: Randy Cohen has trouble pronouncing the name of his column sometimes, and the theme song is delightful. Also, guest readers!

BBC Material World. I feel like this is the smart version of Radio Lab, which everyone else seems to adore and I find to be pandering.

Stories From the Moth. 15 minutes-ish of storytelling each week. I adore about half of these, and the others are at least worth the listen.

The New Yorker: Fiction. Each month, the New Yorker gets one of their contemporary authors to pick a story from the archive, read it aloud, and participate in a discussion about it. The results are sometimes pretty awesome.

On the Media. One hour a week of really smart media analysis.

PRI Selected Shorts. A rebroadcast of live readings held at Symphony Space in NYC, in which famous-ish author's stories are read by famous-ish actors.

Slate V Videocast. This videocast sends out one short video each day, usually entertaining or edifying or both.

Slate's Culture Gabfest. A smart, funny, half-hour conversation about some themed grouping of issues affecting the cultural landscape. A half hour every two weeks.

Slate's Political Gabfest. A weekly conversation much like the Cultural Gabfest, but focusing on politics. I have a giant crush on this podcast. No, I'm not a Slate groupie at all; why do you ask?

This American Life. Of course.

MUSIC

Long-Form

KEXP Presents Music That Matters. About one hour a week. Each show is curated by a particular KEXP DJ, so the podcast as a whole is pretty eclectic in genre. Past shows are listed here. KEXP also has a podcast of live in-studio appearances (subscribe at the main page, see show list here), but I'm not keeping up with that one.

NPR: All Songs Considered About a half hour a week of themed or genre-grouped shows. I'm not subscribing to the live concerts podcast on this show either, because I prefer the variety to the long-form programming, but I bet they're good.

LesInrocks.com. This is in French, so I only understand some of the interstitial commentary, but the show presents a very nice mix of music that includes some stuff I'm not hearing anywhere else.

Short-Form

IndieFeed. I'm actually not certain which flavor of this podcast I'm subscribed to, but the selection is pretty good and there's a little bit of commentary on each track.

KCRW's Today's Top Tune. One song per day selected by New York's KCRW.

KEXP Song of the Day. One song per day selected by Seattle's KEXP. List of previous songs here

MPR Song of the Day. A song each day, selected by Minnesota Public Radio.

By the way, the secret to keeping up with all of these SongADay podcasts was (for me, at least) to create a SmartPlaylist that pulls put the tracks you haven't heard yet. I can't quite recall how I did it, but I think you can make one Smart playlist that combines all of them (select "Name" or "Description," pick "contains," and then fill in info for each target) and then a second playlist that winnows that group to unheard podcasts ("Podcast" "is true" AND "Play count" "is" "0").

These guys are sadly not updating anymore, but they're still on my queue in case they start again:

Hidden Kitchens. Just added this one and I'm not sure if it's still updating, but the archives are great: it's ten carefully edited minutes each week about the history of a nontraditional food source.

Slate Explainer. Explainer answers one current events question a day, usually in 2-3 minutes. This is a duplication of the print Explainers, but hearing researched pronunciations of names that are relevant to hot-button issues is almost worth the listen alone.

The Tor Books Podcast. I listen to this because I kind of have to, but it really is very good sometimes. We haven't been updating much recently, though.

I don't have quite enough time to listen to these regularly, but enjoy them when I do:

BBC News Quiz and Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!. Comedic news quizzes. The latter is somewhat more comprehensible to me (since it deals with American rather than British politics), but the BBC version is better and smarter.

WGBH Classical Performance. This gives a little bit of context for each piece, so I subscribed for awhile as part of my effort to actually appreciate classical music. Shockingly, I tended to leave it until after I'd already

Adventures in Sci Fi Publishing. Probably my favorite of the SF specialty podcasts.

");
